I received an email recently that posed a very good question: Can lab-created diamonds be certified by GIA like natural diamonds are? The short answer is yes they can. Lab-created diamonds are indeed different from natural ones. They don’t have traces of carbon-14 (which exists in trace amounts in all things),

no impurities, or any other distinguishable differences as you might find with a pink diamond for example; but these details can check by a GIA grader nonetheless. The process starts by having your CVD diamonds sent to a GIA Accredit Laboratory for grading. It’s best to choose one near where you live so that shipping costs aren’t add

on top of what it already costs to get them grade. Once at the lab, your Lab Diamonds will examine under high magnification using a 10x magnification loupe
