‍Mumbai Indians have appointed South Africa’s first-class coach Mark Boucher as their new head coach. Boucher will be the third head coach in the history of Mumbai Indians, who were established in 2008 as a franchise cricket team. He replaces Duncan Fletcher, former South Africa wicketkeeper and current Mumbai Indians fielding coach, who was appointed earlier this year.

Mumbai Indians also announced that Mark has signed a five-year contract as the Head Coach from January 1, 2018. The Indian Premier League franchise said that Mark will work with the Mumbai Under-19 side and also mentor Kolkata Knight Riders in the future.

Boucher will be responsible for leading the team through four different phases: selection of players for the squad; management of player performance; coaching strategy; and finalizing selection based on results and performances during each phase.

South Africa’s Test Coach in the making?

Mark Boucher’s appointment has raised many questions about the future of Dale Richards, South Africa’s Test and One-Day stand-in coach. Richards was appointed in November 2016 as a replacement for Ottis Gibson, who was appointed as the head coach of South Africa’s national team.

Boucher became South Africa’s first-class coach in 1996 and coached the Proteas in all three formats before being appointed as the National Coach in 2016. Richards was a member of the selection panel that appointed Boucher as the Proteas coach. Richards has been in the news for his candid comments where he criticized the Indian Premier League and said that he doesn’t understand why it is popular in the country.

Mumbai Indians appoint Duncan Fletcher as head coach

Duncan Fletcher’s appointment as a Mumbai Indians head coach came as a surprise. Considering the fact that Fletcher was with Mumbai Indians as a team mentor and field coach, it was very surprising that the franchise would appoint him as their new head coach. Fletcher took charge as the Mumbai Indians’ head coach for the third time. He had first taken charge in 2013 and had resigned midway in 2014 to take over as the South Africa coach.

Mumbai Indians appointed him as the head coach again in 2016 and he resigned midway in 2017. The franchise announced his appointment as their head coach this year. Despite being with the franchise for three separate stints as a head coach, Fletcher has never led a team to the playoffs. He has led the side to the finals twice but they have lost both finals to Chennai Super Kings.

Mark Boucher appointed as Mumbai Indians Head Coach

The Mumbai Indians have a history of appointing former cricketers as their head coaches. They had appointed Rahul Dravid as their batting coach in 2000 and had given him the charge as their head coach in 2004. Dravid had led the team to the IPL title in 2008. The Mumbai Indians had also appointed Sachin Tendulkar as their batting coach in 2013. However, he resigned from the job in 2017.

Mumbai Indians had announced their reappointment of Tendulkar for the second time in December last year. The franchise had appointed Mark Boucher as their fielding coach in December 2017 and he was expected to take charge as the head coach of the team. However, the franchise later announced that Boucher will be the new Mumbai Indians head coach.
