Sam Neesham has rejected a contract offer from New Zealand Cricket to play Twenty20 cricket. The 29-year-old batsman, who was also an important member of New Zealand’s Test and One-Day International sides, has now offer a central contract by the national body. However, the offer was not good enough for Neesham, who wants to continue playing first-class cricket in the county circuit rather than taking up T20 contracts.

“To be able to represent your country is a privilege and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Blackcaps,” said Neesham after rejecting New Zealand Cricket’s offer. “Although it did not work out this time around, I am thankful for the opportunity they have given me over the last two years.” Since his debut against Australia in December 2012, he has played 46 Tests and 118 ODIs. In both formats of the game, he showed consistency with almost 100 runs in every innings.

T20XI: What are the pros and cons of this format?

The concept of opening up the game for more players is a great idea and will help bring in more revenue for the game. Unlike the regular cricket game, where the ball can be hit at any part of the field, in T20, you need to keep the field open and try and hit the ball through vacant spaces. This will also encourage the bowlers to try and find the gaps in the batting line-up, which are very likely to result in wides and ducks. In the context of the Indian Premier League, where top players earn a lot of money, it would be interesting to see how many players will be willing to give up their IPL contracts to play in the T20 format of the game.

Blackcaps lose other top-order batsmen to county teams

The top-order batting for New Zealand has hit hard due to injuries and retirements among the players. Along with skipper Kane Williamson, who has suffered a shoulder injury, the other top-order batters, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor and Neesham have all left the New Zealand Test side for county cricket. Apart from these players, New Zealand also lost Tom Latham to the county circuit.

Latham, who was an important part of the Test side in the recent series against Australia, has turned down an offer from New Zealand Cricket to join Surrey. The Proteas are expect to play a few T20s during the tour, which will be an exciting contest for the fans. With the Proteas not playing any Tests in the country, the T20 series against New Zealand will be a huge draw for the fans. And with the New Zealand team set to include players like Jimmy Neesham and Jeevan Mendis, it will further increase the popularity of the format in the country.

Why is Jimmy Neesham not interest in playing T20s?

In the last two years, Neesham has played both the formats of the game and had a great experience. However, he is clearly not interest in playing T20s and wants to play only the longer version of the game.

When he was offered a contract by New Zealand Cricket, he was told that he will allow to continue playing first-class cricket and that even if he was not on the national side, he would allow to play for any team in the country. However, it would be interesting to see if there are any teams who are willing to offer Neesham a contract after he has rejected the offer from New Zealand Cricket.

Conclusion

New Zealand Cricket is hoping to get a few extra cricketers to play T20s, especially those who have retired from the longer version of the game. However, they will have to wait as Neesham has rejected the offer and wants to continue playing first-class cricket.
