‍If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by life or like it was passing you by, chances are you’ve probably Googled “how to be happy” a time or two. After all, research shows that the more we google about something, the more likely we are to eventually find what we’re looking for. Except when it comes to happiness and thriving on the inside out. 

Where Google leads us doesn’t always tell the complete truth about things and can often leave us feeling overwhelmed with false expectations and unrealistic ideas of what leads to true happiness. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope for those of us who struggle with finding joy in our lives sometimes. 

While some days are definitely harder than others, no one has to feel alone when they don’t know how to thrive on the inside out. Luckily, there is a lot of wisdom out there for those who seek it and there are several small changes that anyone can make in their daily lives that will have an exponential impact on their happiness level in no time. Let’s take a look at


Focus on the things that make you happy.

We can’t be happy when we’re too busy chasing things that aren’t really important to us. And even if the things we’re chasing are important, if we’re too busy chasing them we’re not really living in the moment. What we focus on determines whether or not we feel stressed, anxious, or sad. So when you’re trying to figure out how to thrive on the inside out, the first thing you want to do is take a good look at yourself and ask yourself what kind of things make you happy. Once you figure that out, you can start to make small, thoughtful changes to your life to shift your focus a little more towards those things.


Be kind to yourself.

Feelings are just feelings. There is no reason to beat yourself up when you’re feeling down or frustrated. Life isn’t supposed to be easy. Sometimes we are going to feel sad, scared, mad, or bored. But we don’t have to let those feelings get the best of us if we have self-kindness (the capacity to be self-aware of and kind to our feelings) on hand. Next time you’re feeling down, reach for a self-kindness book, journal, or image and remind yourself that those feelings are just feelings, not facts or truths. When you accept and love yourself even when you don’t feel like you deserve it, you’re in a much better position to be kind to others and help them out, too.


Find a hobby you love.

If you’re constantly feeling like you’re running on empty, it’s probably because you’re constantly running at full throttle. Take a moment to stop and think about what you’re doing every day. If you notice that you’re doing the Cricgator things, doing them every day and getting stressed out by them because you’re bored, you might want to consider changing up your routine a bit. 

Next time you’re feeling like you’re just not getting your buzz, take a moment to think about what you could be doing that would give you a different kind of kick. There are so many things you can do when you’re off-duty that don’t take up actual “spare” time. 

There are things like journaling, Cric Gator reading, volunteering, going for walks, spending time with family and friends, practicing yoga, and even simply taking a nap that can help you find a new kind of bliss in your life.


Help someone else.

When you focus on helping others, you’re not only doing something good for the world, you’re helping yourself in the process. Helping others doesn’t have to take a ton of effort, or just involve giving money. Helping someone else can take any form of kindness that helps someone else out, 

even if it’s something as simple as letting someone cut in line because they’re in a rush, giving someone directions, or just smiling at someone who looks like they could use a smile. Helping someone else each day will help you fall in love with yourself more as you learn to love others better.


Stay connected with those closest to you.

Life is all about connections. And making sure you stay connected with those closest to you is one of the best ways to help yourself thrive on the inside out. Next time you’re feeling like something is missing in your life, take a second and think about those who are closest to you and what those relationships could use from you.

Is there anything you can do to help out with someone in your life who is stressed out, overwhelmed, or caught off-guard? Someone who could use a helping hand right now? There are so many ways that you can stay connected with those closest to you and help them out while doing it. 

Write a quick letter to a friend that helps you out. Call a relative who is feeling down and ask them how they are feeling. Pick up the phone and call a friend who is feeling disconnected from those closest to them. Next time you’re feeling like you need a little extra help, reach for a connection and have some help in your life.


Exercise can help you feel better, too!

While feeling better is just one way to thrive on the inside out, it’s definitely a good one. Studies have shown that anyone who exercises regularly has a lower risk of depression and anxiety in comparison to those who don’t. 

And the best part about exercise is that it can be done almost anywhere, anytime, and doesn’t require a ton of effort. There are no wrong ways to exercise and it doesn’t matter what type of movement you choose as long as it gets your heart rate up and helps you feel better while doing it. 

The best part is that even the simplest of exercises like walking, stretching, or jumping rope can help you feel better while they help you stay active and healthy. So next time you’re feeling anxious or depressed, get on your feet and get moving. It will surprise you how much better you’ll feel.



Finding joy in life doesn’t just happen. It takes time to cultivate new habits and make positive changes in your life. This can be difficult when you’re feeling down, but it’s important to keep pushing forward.
